Where the bay ends and the cliffs begin

A surf beach with a cliff walk above it, a harbour behind it, and the Crocodile Rocks breaking the swell at its feet.

In brief

Mangawhai Heads is a surf beach and coastal township about 35 minutes south of Ruakākā, sitting at the mouth of the Mangawhai Harbour where Bream Bay gives way to the dramatic coastline heading south. It has patrolled swimming at the surf club, reliable surf off the Crocodile Rocks, one of the best short cliff walks in Northland, and a sheltered harbour estuary for calm-water swimming and kayaking.

The surf beach

Mangawhai Heads Beach is a 1.8 km stretch of open coast facing the Pacific. The Crocodile Rocks offshore are the defining feature: rocky outcrops that break the swell and create consistent surf. The Mangawhai Heads Surf Life Saving Club patrols the south end of the beach near the car park, every weekend from late October to Easter and daily through peak summer. The big car park at the end of Wintle Street gives easy access to the sand, the club and the cliff walk trailhead.

Surf here is more powerful than at Waipu Cove. The rocks create channels and concentrated swell. Good for experienced surfers, but respect the conditions. The beach walk north of the patrolled area is stunning and generally uncrowded.

The Mangawhai Cliff Walk

This is the headline attraction. The track starts from the surf beach car park and climbs steeply to the clifftops, rising to around 100 metres above sea level. The views are enormous: the Hen and Chicken Islands, the Northland coast stretching north, and on clear days, Great Barrier Island and the Coromandel. The track follows the cliffs north before dropping to a remote section of beach. At low tide you walk the sand back to the car park, completing a loop of about 5 km in 1.5 to 2 hours.

The critical detail: the beach return section is only passable at low tide. Check the tide table before you go. The cliff section itself is walkable at any tide but without the beach return you must retrace your steps. The climb is steep in places. Wear proper shoes, not jandals.

The harbour

Behind the surf beach, the Mangawhai Harbour offers the opposite experience: flat water, sheltered swimming, and kayaking. The estuary is popular with families whose children are too young for the surf side. At low tide the sandflats emerge and the wading is gentle. The harbour mouth has its own currents, so stay well inside.

The town

Mangawhai has two centres: Mangawhai Village (the older, quieter part with cafes, the market and the museum) and Mangawhai Heads (the beach end, with holiday homes, the surf club and a general store). The village market runs on selected Sundays and is worth timing a visit around. The cafes in the village are a step above what most small NZ towns offer.

Getting here from Ruakākā

About 35 to 40 minutes by car. South on SH1 past Waipu, take the Mangawhai turnoff and follow the signs to Mangawhai Heads. The drive passes through rolling Northland farmland and is pleasant in its own right. Mangawhai is technically in Kaipara District, just south of the Bream Bay boundary at Bream Tail.
