Langs Beach is a sheltered crescent between Waipu Cove and Mangawhai, about 20 minutes south of Ruakākā. It is not patrolled. There are no shops, no surf club and no facilities beyond a car park and a toilet block. What it does have is a beautiful beach backed by pōhutukawa, good swimming when conditions are calm, and a quiet that Waipu Cove trades away during the holidays.
The beach
The sand is golden and fine. The pōhutukawa grow right to the edge of it, providing shade that most Northland beaches lack entirely, and a natural climbing frame that children disappear into. The beach is shorter than Waipu Cove and more sheltered, which makes the water calmer on most days but also means it misses the bigger swells that surfers want.
Swimming here is good in calm conditions but there are no lifeguards. The currents can be deceptive near the rocky ends of the bay. If you want flags and patrols, drive five minutes to Waipu Cove.
Ding Bay
At the north end of Langs Beach, at low tide, you can pick your way over the rocks to Ding Bay. It is a tiny, secluded beach surrounded by cliffs and native bush. The name comes from the surfboards dinged on the rocks getting there. On a calm day it is one of the prettiest spots on this coast. Go before mid-afternoon when the sun drops behind the cliff. And only go at low tide. The rocks are impassable at high water.
Walks
The Waipu Coastal Walkway starts (or ends, depending on your direction) at the Cove Road entrance just south of Langs Beach. It climbs to the clifftops and runs north to Waipu Cove with views out to the Hen and Chicken Islands the entire way. About 3 km, 45 minutes to an hour.
The Langsview Track is a 6.5 km one-way walk from Cove Road south of the beach to the trig point above Langs, with panoramic views over the beach, the islands and inland to the Brynderwyn Range. Less well known than the coastal walkway and quieter for it.
Practical
There are no shops at Langs Beach. The nearest supplies are at the Waipu Cove General Store (5 minutes) or Waipu village (10 minutes). The car park fills on summer weekends. If it is full, the beach is likely busy by Langs standards, which still means you can find a quiet spot under a pōhutukawa.
Langs Beach was named Northland's most expensive suburb in 2019. The houses behind the trees are impressive. The beach in front of them is free.
Getting here from Ruakākā
South on SH1 to the Langs Beach turnoff, about 20 minutes. The road winds down to a small car park near the beach.
