The beach house, done properly

Sleeps nine across three bedrooms and a bunk room, two minutes over the dune from the sand.

This is our family's house, set up the way a beach house should be: a kitchen that can feed a crowd, decks that catch the sun from breakfast to dusk, a rumpus the kids disappear into, and the pizza oven lit by six most evenings. You will find beach toys in the garage and sand in the car on the way home.

Room to spread out

Open plan living flows off a kitchen with a proper island and range. A second lounge gives the kids their own screen, and the fireplace earns its keep on winter weekends. Nobody sleeps on a couch: the master and queen rooms take the adults, the bunk room and rumpus take everyone under twelve, happily.

Outdoors

Where the day ends up

Wraparound decks with the hammock that gets argued over, a lawn big enough for cricket, the trampoline, and the wood fired oven that turns dinner into the evening's entertainment. The spa comes into its own after dark, once the small people are horizontal.

A day here

Goes something like this

Coffee on the deck while the early risers walk the dune path to check the surf. Back for breakfast with a report.
Morning
Beach until lunch, pools at low tide, flags up by the club. Wet towels accumulate on the deck rail. Nobody tracks the time.
Midday
Oven lit at six. Pizzas, the day's fish if the dawn shift delivered, spa after dark. Repeat tomorrow with minor variations.
Evening

Sleeping layout

The master takes a king with its own ensuite and the quiet end of the house. The queen room suits the second couple or grandparents. The bunk room sleeps three; the rumpus adds a double bunk and the floor space kids actually want. Cot and highchair available on request.

Best for

Two families sharing, three generations travelling together, or a group of friends who fish in the morning and cook in the evening. The house is set up for children and the garage holds the boogie boards, buckets and beach shelter so you do not have to pack them.

Things to know

No parties and no smoking indoors; the neighbours are permanent and so is our welcome there. The spa is for adults to supervise, not just enjoy. Sandy feet rinse at the outdoor shower, and the house asks only that it is left roughly as found. Linen is included; bring beach towels.
